What is Integrated Pest Management?

When pests like grubs, chinch bugs, and armyworms take up residence in your lawn, the damage can be swift and extensive. Fortunately, Weed Man’s certified technicians are trained to diagnose insect damage specific to your region and lawn conditions. Using Integrated Pest Management, we diagnose the pest and build a custom treatment program for you.

So, what exactly is Integrated Pest Management?

To put it simply, Integrated Pest Management is an ecosystem-based strategy that focuses on long-term prevention of pests and pest-related damage. We do this with a combination of techniques, including:

  • Biological control
  • Habitat manipulation
  • Modification of cultural practices
  • Use of resistant varieties of grass

This means that we only use pesticides after careful monitoring indicates that they are needed and with the goal of removing only the target organism. In accordance with all guidelines and regulations, we select and apply pest control materials in a manner that minimizes risks to human health, beneficial and nontarget organisms (like pollinators), and the environment.

But it doesn't end there. When we’re talking about Integrated Pest Management, we’re not just talking about managing bugs. In this context, the word “pest” actually includes weeds! Weeds are considered agricultural pests, and the herbicides used to eliminate them are considered a type of pesticide. This means that all the beneficial strategies of Integrated Pest Management apply to weed control as well as pest control.

Today, government agencies are recommending Integrated Pest Management procedures similar to ours, and we’re proud to say that we’ve been using this effective, holistic approach to pest management since we were founded more than 50 years ago.
