New Year’s Yard Resolutions

Ideas to help spruce up your backyard oasis

Each year on New Year’s Eve, it is a tradition for many to look back on the year that has passed, and ahead to what the next year might bring. Creating New Year’s resolutions is a great way to implement lifestyle changes that can lead to a healthier and happier life. While it is important to be grateful for what we already have, there is always room for growth in other areas of our life as well.

New Year’s resolutions don’t always have to be about ourselves, either – many people set resolutions for their work or home. Since we have been spending more and more time at home due to the global pandemic, why not consider implementing some New Year’s resolutions for your yard? We’ve compiled a list of possible changes you may want to try out. Read on to see the list below!

Add a fire pit

One option to spruce up your backyard in the new year is to add a fire pit. Depending on regulations in your area, these don’t have to be expensive gas-powered fire pits, either – a few stones and some cut up logs will do!

Fire pits make a great addition to any backyard as they provide a place for friends and family to gather and spend time with one another no matter the season. In the winter, the fire makes for a great heat source, and on cool summer nights, the fire can even be used to deter mosquitoes.

Plant a fruit tree

If you’re looking for a chance to exercise your green thumb in the new year, try planting a fruit tree in your yard. Not only are they nice to look at, but you’ll be set for fresh fruit!

Common fruit trees to plant are apple, cherry, pear, peach, and plum trees, but there are countless others that can thrive in your backyard (climate-dependent).

Invest in a sprinkler system

Perhaps one of your New Year’s resolutions is to save yourself more time to get back to things that make you happy. With so many components to remember, why not save yourself the time of planning out a watering schedule and have automatic sprinklers do it for you?

Start a vegetable or herb garden

If planting an entire tree seems like too big of a task for you this year, consider starting a vegetable or herb garden (or both!) this year.

There are plenty of vegetables and herbs that are relatively simple to grow, like tomatoes, cucumbers, garlic, basil, mint, and more. And, like with the fruit tree, fresh vegetables and herbs means even more flavourful, natural dishes to be prepared in the kitchen.
