Soil Systems

The foundation of your lawn.

Soil is more than just dirt. It is complex and greatly impacts the health of your lawn. Believe it or not, one handful of healthy soil contains a complex mixture of solids, liquids, and gases, and is made up of more living organisms than the number of people on the planet! With this in mind, it’s safe to say that soil is the foundation of your turf. If you are experiencing problems on your lawn, it could be due to unhealthy soil, as each grass blade relies on the soil beneath it to help it grow into a strong, healthy and lush lawn. It all starts in the roots!

Soil Characteristics

The texture of your soil is ultimately classified by the percentage of sand, silt, or clay it contains. Soil can be fine or coarse, and each classification influences different properties in the soil itself, such as its ability to drain, its compaction, its pH levels, and more.
Speaking of your soil’s pH levels, it is important that they are balanced at all times in order to ensure healthy grass and a pest- and weed-free lawn. If your lawn looks brown in some areas, it may be due to an unbalanced pH. If this is the case, contact your local Weed Man Professional. They will take a soil sample to determine what applications your lawn and soil require in order to return them both to a healthy state.

What do I need to know about keeping my soil in top shape?

If your soil is compacted, it could be affecting the overall health of your turfgrass. In time, this can lead to disease, or insect and weed invasion. In this case, aeration is recommended. This will help air circulate through the soil while deepening your lawn’s root system. It can also help reduce water usage.

Fertilizer applications can also greatly benefit the health of your soil, and therefore your lawn as a whole. Weed Man’s exclusive poly 43.5 granular slow-release fertilizer is recommended by golf course superintendents over our competitors’ fertilizer products. Our formula lasts 120 days in the soil and ensures proper nutrition and root development, adding valuable organic matter back into your lawn’s soil.
