What are the Most Common Lawn Insects?

Several insects can cause serious damage to lawns. The most common include:

  • Chinch Bugs: Tiny surface feeders that suck the juices from grass blades, leaving dry, patchy spots.
  • Sod Webworms: Caterpillars that chew grass blades and create small brown patches.
  • Cutworms: Night feeders that chew off grass at the crown, often in circular patches.
  • Armyworms: Rapidly moving caterpillars that can strip large areas of turf in a short time.
How Do I Know If Insects Are Damaging My Lawn?

Signs of insect damage include irregular brown or yellow patches, turf that lifts easily like a carpet (from grubs feeding on roots), thinning grass despite proper watering, or visible insects when you part the blades of grass.

How Do I Control Common Lawn Insects?

If you’re seeing insects you don’t recognize or lawn damage you can’t explain, we can help! We specialize in identifying, controlling, and preventing lawn killers.

Some insects can only be controlled at certain points in their life cycle. Our experts will determine:

  • The insect responsible for the damage
  • The life cycle of that insect
  • The level of the infestation

From there, we find that the best lawn insect control results come from an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. We’ll build a customized treatment program for you. We use a combination of techniques in a manner that minimizes risks to:

  • Human health
  • Pets
  • Beneficial and nontarget organisms like pollinators
  • The environment

If you're seeing unexplained lawn damage in your yard, your first step should be to find the local Weed Man in your area.

How Do I Control Flying Insects in My Yard at Night?

Many flying insects, like moths, may seem harmless when you see them fluttering around lights at night. But some species lay eggs that hatch into turf-damaging larvae (such as grubs, sod webworms, and cutworms), which can cause serious lawn damage.

To help control nighttime flying insects:

  • Reduce Outdoor Lighting: Bright lights attract moths and other night-fliers. Use yellow “bug lights” or keep lighting to a minimum.
  • Eliminate Standing Water: Standing water attracts mosquitoes and other pests. Empty birdbaths, clogged gutters, and other containers.
  • Maintain a Healthy Lawn: Thick, well-fertilized turf is less vulnerable to insect damage, even if egg-laying occurs.
  • Professional Treatments: Lawn insect control programs target both the current pests and their larvae to stop the cycle before major damage occurs.

By addressing flying insects now, you can prevent their larvae from becoming a bigger problem in your lawn later.

CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORIES

We have helped countless homeowners take their lawns from weedy to “Wow!”

Weed Man Scarborough, ON

This is my first year using a lawn service company for my weeds. I was skeptical at first but whatever they did to my lawn worked. The advice they gave me about what I could do to help keep the lawn looking great from watering to length of cut really helped. I had several people comment on how great it looked. I called in a few times with questions about my lawn care. By far the best customer service people I've dealt with in a long time. Great people. Highly recommend.

Weed Man Abbotsford, BC

This team is great. What appears to be a quick come and gone application, is from experience and a good eye. The moss control and fertilizer application has greatly improved the rich green colour. The aeration and overseeding has filled in those mole hills from last year's damage. Tegjot has requested a second weed control spray to get that pesky buttercup under control. Nearly 20 year of neglect is a work in progress, but already looks so much better.. Thank you.
