How Do I Know if I Have Fire Ants?

Look for dome-shaped soil mounds in sunny areas of your lawn. Disturbing the mound usually triggers a swarm of aggressive ants.

What are Fire Ants and Where Do They Come From?

Fire ants are aggressive, stinging ants that build large mounds in lawns. They are most commonly found in residential lawns in warm and humid regions, such as in the southern United States.

You can recognize them by their reddish-brown colour, and they can range in size from 0.3 - 0.6 cm long.

Their mounds are much larger than most other types of ant species, with undisturbed mounds reaching up to a foot in height.

They will swarm out of their nests and attack anything they perceive as a threat, including humans and pets. Their stings can be painful and can even cause an allergic reaction in some individuals.

Are Fire Ants Dangerous?

Yes. Fire ants sting multiple times, injecting venom that causes painful welts. In some cases, stings can trigger severe allergic reactions.

How Do I Get Rid of Fire Ants?

Completely ridding your lawn of fire ants is incredibly difficult and best left up to a fire ant control expert.

Sprays and other solutions that are sold in hardware stores may help you kill a few ants at a superficial level, but they:

  • Are not a long-term solution, as female ants can lay thousands of eggs per day.
  • May damage your healthy turf grass.
  • Can’t reach all of the complex ant colonies that may be 1.5 meters (5 feet) deep.

Our treatments target the entire colony, including the queen, using products designed to eliminate the ants and prevent new mounds from forming.
