Billbug Control is Crucial!

Left Unchecked, Your Lawn May Not Recover.

Unsightly Damage

If you’re noticing irregularly shaped discolouration and weakened roots in your lawn, billbugs may be the cause.

Easily Mistaken

Billbug damage often resembles drought symptoms. That is, until it doesn’t respond to watering, and the damage spreads.

Potentially Permanent

If the infestation is left unchecked and your lawn’s root system becomes severely damaged, the grass may not recover without great effort and expense.

Act Now!

Billbugs are tough to control. Early intervention is crucial. A Weed Man technician can assess your lawn and build a treatment plan.

Identify and Diagnose

Yellowing grass can be caused by multiple pests or diseases. Correct diagnosis is essential – the wrong treatment may make the problem worse.

Protect Today & Tomorrow

Billbugs can come back if not treated the right way. Your Weed Man technician will create a plan to get rid of your billbugs and keep them away.

What are Billbugs?

Adult billbugs (Sphenophorus parvulus) are blackish gray in colour with a hard body. They are typically about 3/16" (5 mm) in size and can be distinguished by their snout-like forehead.

They will feed on your lawn’s roots for about six weeks, weakening the grass and root structure. They go through several instars (or molts), growing larger each time, and causing progressively worse damage.

How Do I Kill Billbugs in My Lawn?

It’s less about killing them and more about controlling them.

At Weed Man, the larvae of the billbug are what we aim to control because they cause root damage and not the adult beetle stage.

Only a trained and experienced billbug control expert will build a comprehensive control plan to rid your yard of these pests and keep them away.

How Do I Get Rid of Billbugs?

Lawns that are already thin, dry, or infested with weeds are especially susceptible to billbug activity and damage. Weed Man’s trained experts can help you once an infestation has occurred, but the best billbug control strategy always starts with prevention.

This is achieved through beneficial cultural practices such as:

  • Proper watering: Not too much or too little.
  • Regular mowing: Never remove more than ⅓ of the grass blade at each mowing, or cut it shorter than 2.5 inches high (6 CM).
  • Regular fertilization: Using Weed Man’s slow-release granular fertilizer to keep your lawn thick, lush, and healthy.
  • Aeration: This helps water penetrate deeper and alleviates soil compaction.

The best time to control bluegrass billbugs is when they are very young (in June and July), before you are faced with severe damage.
