Mechanical Core Aeration

Mechanical core aeration is the process of removing small cores of soil and thatch (the thin layer of organic debris below the grass roots) from your lawn to deepen the root system, improve drainage, and allow water, fertilizer, and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the soil where it is needed. This improves the appearance of your lawn and makes it more resistant to conditions like disease, insects, drought, and heat stress. In short, when performed annually, mechanical core aeration creates the ideal growing conditions to help your lawn grow lush and healthy!

In certain regions (including Canada and the northern U.S.), mechanical core aeration is performed in combination with another service called overseeding.

Overseeding

Overseeding is the process of spreading suitable seed varieties throughout the lawn to help it fill back in. For the best results, we often overseed in combination with mechanical core aeration. When we aerate, we use specially designed aeration equipment, which consists of a series of hollow coring tines. When these tines are rolled over the lawn, they puncture the soil, removing small soil plugs (or cores) and leaving small holes behind. These holes are precisely what allow the seeds to fall deep into the soil and germinate, resulting in a thicker, healthier lawn!
