Are Craneflies and Leatherjackets the Same Thing?

Two names. One problem.

Craneflies are large, mosquito-like insects that only live long enough to breed. Their larvae, called leatherjackets, live in the soil and feed on grass roots, causing thin, patchy lawns that feel spongy underfoot.

How Can I Tell if I Have a Cranefly Problem?

Watch for adult crane flies hovering over your lawn in late summer, or for brown, uneven patches appearing in spring. If you pull back a small section of sod and see grey, worm-like larvae, you’re likely dealing with leatherjackets.

Can You Control Craneflies in Your Yard?

You can! We’ve found that the best leatherjacket/cranefly control strategy is ensuring that your lawn is draining sufficiently with no standing water, while also focusing on beneficial cultural practices, such as:

  • Watering your lawn properly and regularly
  • Mowing between 7.5-9 cm (3-3.5 inches) high, and never removing more than ⅓ of the grass blade.
  • Fertilizing the lawn without overfeeding.
  • Getting professional core aeration once or twice a year.

Weed Man can also help with an effective insect control plan.

Will Craneflies Go Away on Their Own?

Unfortunately, no. Without treatment, larvae can survive winter and continue feeding in spring, causing long-term damage to turf roots and plant density.

Are Treatments Safe for My Family and Pets?

Yes. Weed Man uses targeted, professional-grade applications that are safe when applied correctly. Our treatments are designed to control pests while keeping your lawn – and your family – protected.

Do Craneflies Bite?

No, craneflies and leatherjackets do not bite humans or your pets. Adult craneflies resemble mosquitoes and are often mistaken for them. But they actually lack the necessary mouthparts to pierce human skin. However, they do feed on your lawn.

If you think you have a cranefly infestation, don’t delay. Start right now by finding a Weed Man expert in your area.
