Mowing & Watering Tips

Keep Your Lawn Thriving This Season

At Weed Man, we understand that lawn care can be confusing at times.

Not to worry! Successful lawn care relies on an ongoing partnership between you and your Weed Man professional. Below, you'll find some best practices to help you get the most out of this season.

Mowing Tips

Q: How low should I mow?

A: The ideal mowing height for most home lawns is 7.5-9 cm (3-3.5 inches). the easiest thing to do is to make sure your mower is set 1-2 settings above the "middle" setting.

Q: How often should I mow?

A: Mow your lawn as often as you need to in order to maintain the proper height. Your lawn may require mowing more than once a week during peak growth periods in the spring and fall and only once every two weeks during the hot summer months.

Q: Should I bag my clippings?

A: If your lawn is sitting at the desired height, it is much healthier for your lawn to mulch the clippings back into itself. However, if your lawn is too long, the clippings may smother the lawn. In this case, it would be better to bag your clippings.

Q: Do I need to sharpen my mower blade?

A: Yes! Lawn mower blades should be kept razor sharp. A sharp blade makes a clean, precise cut for each grass blade. A dull mower blade, on the other hand, chews and frays the lawn. To maintain a sharp blade, you may need to sharpen the blade up to 3 times annually.

Watering Tips

Q: How much water does my lawn need?

A: Whether it is through natural rainfall or a sprinkler, your lawn should receive about 1-2 inches of water per week. During particularly dry times, you will want to ensure you are manually watering your lawn to maintain this standard.

Q: How often should I water my lawn?

A: At Weed Man, we always say that deep, infrequent watering is best! When it comes to determining whether your lawn needs to be watered, look for signs of drought or flooding. If your lawn shows symptoms of drought, water it immediately. If your lawn appears to be soaked, do not continue to water, as it can lead to lawn disease.

Q: What time of day is best to water my lawn?

A: Early morning is the best time of day to water your lawn. Midday watering during hot, dry weather can waste water, since much of the water evaporates. On the other hand, evening watering promotes the spread of disease.
